Maybe: There might be some that will have a minor effect on your downs, but these should be coordinated with your prescriber as there can be adverse effects. For example, st. John's wort has long been confirmed as a "natural" antidepressant. But that's because the plant synthesizes an antidepressant chemical little different than one made by a pharm company. These are known to provoke mania.

The idea is not to eliminate all mood changes, but to prevent mania and depression -- very painful and personally disruptive states.

Although i don't see a mood disorder listed, i believe you may have indicated in one of your past questions that you have a bipolar  spectrum mood disorder. Your psychiatrist will likely select your mood stabilizer depending on which type of bipolar do you have, side effect profile ; response to previous medications. Take care.

Is it that drug?: Often people taking mood stabilizers are also receiving 2nd generation antipsychotics which in themselves can cause weight gain. Check with your physician. Data on side effects for valproic acid and specifically depamide indicates less than 1% may have weight gain.Asimilar number may have weight loss as well.

WHY DO YOU WANT THEM: If you're considering taking them its likely youve seen difficulty you can't fix alone. Work with someone. A therapist can usually help with these things and if it seems tobe serious trouble a therapist can recommend someone who can really help.

Not a lot, probably: If someone without a mood disorder takes a mood stabilizer, there is no benefit.  You would be exposed to the side effects of the medication, with no reason to take it and no symptoms to track for "improvement."  seems like a waste to me.  I wonder why you would want to take it?
