Good: Nasopharynx cancer is easily treated.  In second stage therei are  cervical lymph nodes but when high in neck it is easy to encompass a field where the pharyngeal lesion is hit by cross RT beams and the neck also treated with RT.  Chemo is then given which in most instances is successful. Surgery most of the time is not indicated.

About 60% survival: Nasopharynx Ca probably caused by the EBV virus arises in the posterior throat area just behind the nose.  When localized it is easily treated by radiation therapy.  When it spreads to the cervical nodes chemo such as the platinums are added.  Here survival dropos to the 40% level.  With newer drugs the survival however is improving.

Nose and throat CA.: This is cancer of the nose and throat.  These are more common in the far east and mediterranian.  This has a distinct histology, namely, nonkeratinizing undifferentiated carcinoma with infiltrating lymphocytes or lymphoepithelioma.  This is also due to epstein-barr virus.  Symptoms appear late in the course, and cause unilateral serous otitis media nasal obstruction or epistaxis.

Symptoms: The most common presenting complaints in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma are headache and a mass in the neck, due to  metastases to lymph gland on the neck. Nasal obstruction with nose bleed, and serous otitis media also could happen.

Nasal obstruction.: Unilateral nasal obstruction or epistaxis (bleeding), and unilateral serous otitis media are the main symptoms/signs of this.  Oral cavity cancers present as nonhealing ulcers that can be painful, .  Oropharyngeal cancers can have sore throat and otalgia (ear pain) late in their course.  Hoarseness can be an early sign in laryngeal cancer.  Painless hard lymph node enlargement can rarely be seen.

Depend on the stage: The chance is pretty good . However, off course, it will depend on the stage.  The earlier the stage  the higher your chance to have the nasopharyngeal cancer cured.

#1 is neck mass.: The most common presenting symptom of nasopharyngeal cancer is painless enlargement of lymph node(s) in the neck.  This is followed by nasal symptoms such as discharge, bleeding, blocked nose.  Next common would be ear symptoms such as hearing loss and ringing in the ears.  Other symptoms include headache, vision problems, facial numbness, weight loss, jaw joint problems, and slurred speech.

Can still be cured: Treatment will require multidisciplinary approach- which will include medical oncologist, radiation oncologist , and perhaps surgical oncologist. 
5 year survival depending on the low or high pretherapy ebv dna- is 66% and 54% respectively. See your medical team ( medical oncologist /radiation oncologist ) and discuss further with your mds in detail.
