might be a dumb question but is my nasal spray safe to use if ive had it for over a year but the expiration date has not passed? this question also goes to all medication i might have from a year ago.

Generally yes: If uses as directed any such meds are considered safe until their expiration date. If you have in some way altered the med/stored it in an improper way,etc. it might be bad. The expiration date is the last date the product is considered at its full strength. Some of these will still be good for a while longer if properly stored.

what does drixine nasal spray do to your nose when you use it for more than a year?

Rebound congestion: Drixine nasal spray contains oxymetazoline which is a nasal decongestant (vasoconstictor).  If it is used for more than about 5-8 days in a row, some people can develop rhinitis medicamentosa which is a fancy word for rebound nasal congestion when a person tries to stop using it.  The nasal congestion can be severe and difficult to treat and frequently prescription medication is needed.

Yes: The potency possible will be less still only use 1-2 sprays per nostril. If it works great! There is no concern that it went sour or could harm you.

Accepted Answer

No: If you are talking about an over the counter nasal spray such as Neo-Synephrine or afrin, then the use of these nasal sprays is harmful and can lead to rhinitis medicamentosa, an entity that causes permanent damage to your nasal lining.  A topical steroid may usually be used for many months.  By injection, i assume you mean spraying.  Substance abuse may  lead to irreversible damage and fungus.

my 4 year old has had a very bad cough for about 4 weeks - she was given nasal spray, tablets and syrup as she was diagnosed with very bad nasal issues last week - we were told that it should be better within 4 days, but it's gotten worse this mornin?

Worth a re-check: Cough &amp; cold symptoms may be complicated by ear or sinus infections as they work through their system. Symptomatic treatments seldom do much more than give you something to do. If you feel the kid is worse, it is worth a re-check to see what else is going on.

i gave three sprays of fluticasone nasal spray accidentally in each of my kids nose who is 5 year old. please let me know if its dangerous.

Your kid will be ok: I'm assuming this was prescribed for some reason but either way any dose of fluticasone just once is unlikely to have deleterious effect. Nasal sprays, in general, should be avoided in kids if not prescribed. Decongestant sprays are addicting and cause worsening symptoms over time. Steroids such as fluticasone, disrupt hormonal balances and normal adrenal function if used regularly .

Usually no worries: The back of the nose leads to the throat. People who use nasal sprays are presumed to be swallowing some of the nasal spray. A small amount of saline is harmless to swallow.

Avoid allergens: Please monitor his temperature, use nasal saline and a nasal steroid spray which may relieve the congestion. If there is a fever, please contact your PCP.  Avoid common allergy triggers such as dust, mold, pollen and animal dander.

Accepted Answer

Yes: I often recommend it for those with significant nasal congestion due to allergies, irritants, colds, etc. It is much more helpful than most meds used for colds or congestion.
