Timeline: Early phase: pain, tingling & burning in the area where blsiters will appear begins 2 weeks after exposure & last anywhere from 2 hours-1 day. Constitutional symptoms: headache, fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, feeling sick, shortly follow early phase.  Shortly after this painful reddish bumps develop into fluid-filled blisters over the course of hours & continue to form for 10 days. Gone 6 weeks.

i've got a rash on my forehead between my eyes and on my nose. is that a typical symptom of herpes simplex?

Accepted Answer

No: The most common condition affecting these areas in the way you describe is rosacea.  You could also have shingles (zoster) .  Check with your ophthalmologist to rule out or treat these conditions.  H simplex usually causes a very localized wet blistery lesion on the skin rather than a rash.

i'm having what appears to be a very mild herpes outbreak on my outer nasal septum (thing between my nostrils). it's been several weeks and has not gone away. is this my herpes or something else?

Could be-  see a doc: As a doc can do a culture and blood work if necessary and get you on Valtrex (valacyclovir) if the doc thinks it is herpes or other meds if it is not.

Sure: Zoster ophthalmicus is very serious and causes all kinds of problems.  If it is causing eye irritation it will naturally end up getting tears down the back of your nose into your throat.

should you stop using steroid nasal sprays if you get a herpes outbreak in the eyelids?

Accepted Answer

Not necessary.: Nasal steroid absorption is very poor so not associated with immune suppression. It may aggravate glaucoma.

Accepted Answer

Maybe: herpes of the mouth is usually confined to lip areas or nasal opening "cold sores"
in children it can appear in the throat
mono can 'run you down' and you may be more vulnerable to infections of the throat and gums which may respond to antibiotics

Other causes: A much rarer cause for sores in your mucous membranes is behcets disease - worth discussing with your primary care doc. 
You can't tell a patient they have herpes if the test is negative.

Mgt: It is possible, but other diagnoses such as Strep should be considered. Another possible cause is sinusitis.

Yes.: You can have herpes anywhere, but mucous membranes (mouth, nose, genitalia, etc.) are prime locations. On the other hand, the presence of a sore on (or in) your nose does not necessarily mean you have herpes. You'll need to see a doctor or your local public health clinic to find out if it's herpes - or if it's not, what it actually is.

is it possible to have a herpes outbreak in your nose?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: You can get a herpes outbreak anywhere.  Mucus membranes like the mouth, genital regions, nose are more sensitive.  So yes, if you're getting painful blisters in or around your nose - get it checked out.  Early in an outbreak, antiviral medications can help!
