i've had chronic sinusitis for many years. 2  fess surgeries, allergy shots & all the antiinflammatory/histamines, nasal rinse have not worked. maybe balloon sinuplasty, or could it be a fungal prob?

Have u tried : A combination of singular, Flonase at night and an antihistamine all together?   Its likely not a fungal problem but likely an anatomy issue.  I'm not aware of the procedure but you sound like u need relief.  Oh yeah, what about an air purifier?

Polyps: Great question. Depends on many factors including the extent of the surgery, allergic factors, postop sinus care and frequency of colds. Make sure you have had an allergic work up

Accepted Answer

Caused by allergy: While FESS removes the polyps it does not fix the underlying cause of the polyps which in most cases is allergic rhinitis.  You have to get rid of the allergies or at least get them controlled before the polyps will stop forming.  Best short term therapy is a intranasal steroid spray like Flonase, Nasonex, (mometasone) or a similar one.  Best long term treatment is allergy immunotherapy.  See an allergist.

ENT evaluation: diagnosis and trestment. I suggest trying Advil or Aleve for pI suggest using a 12 hr. nasal decongestant nal spray for 2-3 days only, followed by nasal saline rinse/spray. Wait 10 minutes and use OTC Flonase: 2 sprays/noswtril once daily.

Usually Allergies: Since you typically have more room in your nose after sinus surgery, pollens can now get to more of the nasal lining, sometimes making allergic drainage worse.

Nasal polyposis: FESS x 2, isn't truly a nice experience, I totally agree, hope you won't have to go for it any more. Polyps in the sinuses and nasal cavities can grow for a multitude of reasons, mainly chronic inflammation, which can be due to allergies, wish we know the histopathology of the removed polyps. Treating the chronic inflammation to prevent recurrence helps, but some cases tend to recur, see comment

can you get empty nose syndrome without turbinectomy? had fess 3 weeks ago. third in last 4 yrs. dr said he only removed polyps near middle turbinate.

So called: "Empty Nose Syndrome"(ENS) is seen after extensive turbinate reduction not after the simple removal of nasal polyps!

do i have atrophic rhinitis? 3 weeks post op from fess and having trouble breathing, dry nose, and a distorted sense of smell. or healing process?

Atrophic rhinitis: Unlikely. Need to do saline irrigation twice a day. No smoking or alcohol. Protect nose from particulates. Not unusual to have temporary smell distortion and/or decreased sense of smell. Should get better with time. Did you have septoplasty, splints?  have you kept your post-op apps?

May not be sinus: If your ct scan was perfect then whatever problem you have may not be your sinuses. It may be your nose and some superficial issue or superficial infection. Are you irrigating your nose with a neil med type system? If necessary seek another opinion with a sinus surgeon.

SEE ENT, infection: You probably should see your e.N.T. (surgeon) who did the surgery in order to check for post operative infection.
