: First I recommend having a dermatologist examine his fingernails to determine whether these fingernail findings are abnormal ( vertical ridges are not) &amp; attributable to any systematic disease or deficiencies.. Splinter hemorrhages are often caused by trauma but infection on a a heart valve is a possible cause. The dermatologist will order any appropriate tests after the assessment.

Doubtful: Vertical nail ridges are fairly common and nothing to worry about. They extend from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Vertical nail ridges often become more numerous or prominent with age, possibly due to variations in cell turnover within the nail.
 If your 6 yr old's  fingernails change color or develop horizontal nail ridges, consult your pediatrician or dermatologist.

Silica: Is the first one i think of. Calcium can be another. There is a supplement called horsetail or hair, skin, and nails that is very helpful for many. Horizontal line nail: If  lines are sort of spotty and don't span entire width of the nail, most likely it's due to some minor trauma. These grow out with the nail. If lines span the entire width of the nail, and don't grow with the nail this may be related to a protein deficiency or a number of systemic conditions. The list of possible conditions long. Please have this evaluated by a dermatologist.
