Not that we know of!: Urethritis is often causes by chemical irritation or friction. The urethra is so close to the vagina that it can be injured easily. Also,  If urine is very concentrated from not drinking enough fluids, it can cause irritation to the bladder and urethra.   Drinking fluids until the urine is very light is helpful, as well as sitting in a warm bath without soap.

if i have mycoplasma/ureaplasma would it show on a normal urine culture? my urologist said my symptoms show i have that but cultures come out negative

Difficult to grow: These organisms are difficult to grow, therefore a negative culture does not rule out infection. You may ask your doctor for a molecular test.

i've felt constant discomfort in my genital region. took doxycycline for 14 days yet symptoms persist. i got tested for ureaplasma/mycoplasma yesterday. would the presence of antibiotics give a "false negative" test? do i have to retest in 5 weeks?

Urethritis: Urethritis is treated with Zithrogen, Flagyl and Doxycyl or Fixime and Flagyl, not only Doxycyl. Consult your GP.

? Chemical cystitis: also causes urgency and frequency and burning and is thought to be a sensitivity to chemicals such as dyes instead of infection.  Drink a lot of water until the urine is very light, avoid foods with colored dyes, and urinate at least every 2-3 hours for several days.  If you have persistent symptoms, consult with a urologist.

Cervicitis treatment: What you're experiencing definitely isn't normal, but you need further evaluation and probably antibiotic treatment. Ureaplasma probably isn't responsible:  U. urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are entirely normal in the genital tract and rarely if ever cause symptoms or disease. But speak with your doctor about testing for Mycoplasma genitalium and perhaps trying treatment for it. Good luck.

Gynecologist: If you are a woman, any gynecologist that has the ability to do pcr testing can test for those bacteria.  Ditherix is one lab available for this specific type of bacteria testing.  Often fertility doctors will test for this  as part of an infertility evaluation for women.

Accepted Answer

Means nothing: Ureaplasma is a normal bateria in the urinary tract; up to half of all adults have it. Although rarely some strains of Ureaplasma can cause symptoms, such as the STD nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), there is no need for treatment in men (or women) without symptoms. There is no proved effect on male or female fertility. (The same is also true for most types of Mycoplasma.)

Maybe miscarriages: Ureaplasma & mycoplasma hominis have been implicated in single miscarriages or recurrent pregnancy losses. The studies are not high quality, but it's relatively cheap and easy to give a course of antibiotics to women who have had one or more miscarriages, & their partners. Mycoplasma genitalium may be a cause pelvic inflammatory disease (pid). See a rei specialist if ttc without success.

No risk, no worry: You keep asking about urine exposure and STDs. First, Ureaplasma and most types of Mycoplasma are normal bacteria in the genital tract, not STDs; they cause no symptoms or harm.
