During the procedure: During the duration of the procedure and the anesthetic, your tongue will be numb. After the anesthetic wears off (a few hours), the feeling in your tongue should be back to normal. If not, then you need to be evaluated and treated by your surgeon.

It happens: After the extraction of a lower wisdom tooth, there can be some lingering numbness. This usually means the roots of the extracted tooth were very close to the inferior alveolar nerve which runs the length of the lower jawbone. Often the feeling will come back. Sometimes it doesn't and that is one of the unfortunate rare side effects of wisdom tooth extractions. See your dentist or oral surgeon.

Yes: Call your Oral Surgical Specialist.  Referral to a Neurologist may be in order.

i got extreme pain after 10 days of wisdom tooth extraction and got an x-ray reports it doesn't show any remnant around and numbness around around left side of mouth got worse, what causes the pain and increased numbness after that long?

: May be infection. If your treating Dentist can't help you please see a specialist Oral Surgeon. Antibiotics may be in order.

Dry Socket ?: Infection ? Either way, rancid taste and yellow tongue is not normal. Please see your oral surgeon for further guidance.

No: None that i know of.  You might want to consult with an oral surgeon or neurologist.  The sooner you do something about this the better.  I have seen improvement of this condition after 6 to 12 months too.  Also I have seen some improvement with cold laser therapy.

Tongue lesion: You will need to see a doctor or dentist for examination to make a specific diagnosis.   This should be urgently if unwell/fevers/swallowing troubles.

It can..: Having wisdom teeth removed is still a form of surgery.  You may have not only had teeth removed but soft tissue and bone, depending on what condition they were in prior to extraction.  If they are really still bothering you then go back to the doctor that took them out and have them looked at.  Continuing care is part of what you paid for.

how should i rinse my mouth after wisdom tooth removal?

Accepted Answer

Gently: Avoid any vigorous rinsing on the day of your surgery.   You can rinse gently after eating to remove any food particles in your mouth that day.  Some patients may be advised to use a saline (table salt in water) rinse postoperatively. Some patients may also be instructed to rinse with a Chlorhexidine rinse postoperatively.
