Possible causes: The main reason for light periods is a change in hormone levels. Causes for what seems to be a light period can include: implantation bleeding in early pregnancy, thyroid problems, eating disorders, excessive exercise, initial periods for a girl, use of an intrauterine device, oral contraceptives ; perimenopause.  Dark brown can be old, deoxygenated blood.

Normal variation: Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.

Yes: One of the more common side-effects of Depo-Provera is irregular, unpredictable bleeding--especially in the first 6 months of use.   Some women do have prolonged bleeding and it can be brown.  A short course of estrogen will usually stop it if you get tired of it.  This type of bleeding usually goes away after 6-12 months of use.  Best wishes.

Missed periods: You could be pregnant if you have been sexual active.  Time to buy a home pregnancy test kit, to see if you are pregnant.  Either way, you should see your doctor.

Normal variation: It is common to have some cycle variation from time to time. It it came at the normal time then there is not likely be a cause for concern. If you would like more cycle control consider starting birth control. If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available  at any pharmacy.

Pills?: Medications , most commonly OC's ,pregnancy ,a recent procedure on the uterus or hormonal changes ,can lead to a light period.If this continues to be the case then anyone of these May apply depending on your history.

Color varies: The color of menstrual blood varies and is not usually something we pay a lot of attention to. If your period is coming at the usual time this this is likely your period. If you are also having discharge or signs of infection then see your doctor for testing.
