i can hear my new born pushing trying to poop but he can't is there anyway i can help him?

Yes if needed: Sometimes a newborn makes a bunch of grunty sounds that really mean nothing. They have no social conscience and worry little that their noises would bother us. You can coat a q-tip with vasaline & insert it in the anus to the depth of the cotton & move it a bit & a stool that is ready to move should easily follow it out.

Yes: Yes, that's normal. She may poop multiple times a day or once every 4 days (but then, watch out!). So long as she's acting normal, feeding well and peeing, no worries.

Bile salts, normal: Consistency and frequency of the stools are much more important that color- stool coloring depends a lot on what you eat and how it reacts to the body&#x27;s own digestive juices and enzymes involved in absorbing the nutrients. Brown, yellow, and green are normal colors for stool, but tarry black, blood-tinged, or bright red blood colors are not normal and require a doctor&#x27;s visit and examination

my 13 day old new born boy is pooping pebble like poop and it has been for a couple of days. i am currently struggling with breastfeeding him.

i feel like he is pushing to get the poop out what can i do? is he constipated?

Breastfeeding issues: Talk to a lactation consultant or a midwife in person to get help with positioning and latching techniques. Since your baby has hard, pebble like poop, add 1-2 ounces of formula twice daily to increase his total fluids. Do not give plain water or any juice as his intestinal tract is too immature for this.

i have a newborn that was born on the 20th of this month. he has not pooped for the past 5 days . should i be worried?

Likely fine: Breastfed babies can go a week or longer without poop. They utilize the breast milk so well, they don't make much poop. 5 days is no big deal. You need to be sure baby is at least back to birth weight or higher, and that  is having 8-12 wet diapers daily.  See pediatrician to make sure these are happening and discuss!

No: As long as he is comfortable and has no other symptoms, such as vomiting and abdominal distention with firmness, he is likely OK. He may also continue to pass some gas. There is a huge variation in what is considered normal stooling frequency. All the best.

Urine output: One of the ways we gauge adequate breast milk intake is by the number of wet diapers a baby makes in a 24 hour period ( should be at least 5). The other way is by weight gain ( at least an ounce per day).  Stooling  patterns are highly variable in nursed newborns as some stool every feed while others stool once a week!

i have a 26 day old newborn, she has been on formula for 6 days (nan ha), she has not pooped in over 24 hrs and struggles and is in pain when she passes gas. should i be concerned that she could be constipated?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: If they poop rabbit pellets or hard stool it is constipation. Infants have poor abdominal muscles &amp; poop laying flat, so they need their breathing muscle to assist and often fuss a little with the process. I don't assume this is pain more than work. The belly will get hard as they work it out. If it is hard an ounce of full strength prune juice 1-3X/d can get her moving in a few days.
