Lipids: The LDL of 157 is high for anyone. If there are risk factors other than the LDL for atherosclerotic disease then getting LDL down is advised. Probably can't get this lower starting at 157 than around 120 so likely need a statin in that case.

No weird : Your high HDL is excellent, and likely protective. Your LDL is lower than recommended by even the strictest guidelines. There are cases however, where we intentionally push the LDL to low levels like yours, in patients that are at high risk. Discuss your personal situation with your doctor.

Depends: I believe you mean take atorvastin 10 mg pill-- as it comes only as a pill right?  Anyway, to answer this question more completely one needs to know the other components of your lipid profile ie hdl, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels as well as the ratio of these to calculate the actual ratio of risk along with factoring in other risk factors like lifestyle, sex, family and medical history.

i just started taking lipitor 10 mg. my cholesterol is 271 ldl 192. my question is what are the odds of liver damage from drinking 8 light beers on a friday night only? i dont drink during the week at all. is cholesterol so bad i cant fix w/out med

Not a good idea: You do not need 8 beers, one beer is plenty.   Your cholesterol level and liver are way more important than having that much alcohol.  Moderation and 1 beer is plenty.   I wish you well.

Need more info: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. There are alternatives to taking statin medication, such as diet modification and exercise. It would be useful to talk to the doctor who prescribed atorvastatin as s/he knows more about your health.

High cholesterol: My go to drug for high cholesterol (c) reduction is Crestor (rosuvastatin) and it needs to be given in reduced dosage in patients with chronic kidney disease. I would start you on a dose of 5 mg/day. That will likely not be enough to lower your levels significantly. You need to go to an endcrinologist (e) to see if the e can add other drugs you can take to lower your dangerously high c. Good luck.

Not enough: Your levels are quite high. You likely have a form of familial high cholesterol. You may benefit from higher doses of Lipitor (atorvastatin) but not likely to reach goal levels with this drug alone. You will likely need additional medication(s) to reach your goal. Discuss with your physician.

Dyslipidemia: Blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) can be affected by thyroid disease. After treatment of thyroid disease, it is easier to control lipids as well as many other body functions including weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, depression,  etc.

High LDL: If you have a healthy lifestyle, the choice is optional. By that i mean, 0 cigarettes, 5 servings of fruits & vegetables a day, 10 minutes of relaxation of some kind, a bmi < 30, and 150 minutes of exercise a week. This would put you in a very low risk group (and would probably lower your cholesterol some.)  if you wanted to lower your risk even more, then think of taking 10 mg lipitor (atorvastatin).
