TMJ problem?: If the pain is in front of your ear, you may have a problem with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Other possibilities: tooth decay, ear infection, viral infection of nerve. See your doc/dentist for evaluation &amp; treatment.

i got hit in the ear with a soccer ball today, but i can hear just fine. the area below my jaw hurts when i chew or open wide. should i be concerned?

Not yet: It may take some time to return to normal as the swelling goes down. Take an NSAID such as Ibuprofen (motrin) to alleviate the discomfort and apply warm compresses. If the pain continues longer than a week consider seeing a doctor.

TMD: Sounds like temporomandibular disorder. Go to see your dentist who can evaluate further on your problem- and possibilities of tmd.  Treatment could be conservative  vs corrective surgery. Go to see dentist and get yourself checked.

TMD: Possibly suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD). Often referred to as TMJ. Many causes, but one primary cause is clenching and grinding of the teeth. Stress is a major factor. So, see a Dentist who treats this TMD and get help. Also, a Prosthodontist or Oral Surgeon can evaluate you and make any necessary referrals. Good Luck. Ibuprofen and soft diet in the meantime.

TMJ vs GCA: In your age group this is sometimes a worrisome sign known as jaw claudication and can bee seen with giant cell arteritis ( temporal arteritis) and polymyalgia rheumatica.  Probably a good idea to see doc to eliminate the possibility.

TMJ: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain &amp; limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.

Hm, quit chewing?: Not to be sarcastic, but sometimes the body warns us that we are injuring it by signaling us with pain.  If you cut back chewing and avoid clenching of your jaw as well (which can also cause jaw muscle pain) and your pain begins to resolve then you have your answer.

this past 5-6 days my left side of my jaw (condyle area) hurts when i start chewing or moving it side to side. will it get better on its own and how long? any remedies to heal the process faster? thank you?

: I assume this is not a dental problem.  You may have strained a masseter muscle somehow or this could be a type of temporomandibular joint ( TMJ)  dysfunction. At this time all you can due is avoid strenuous chewing activity to rest the muscle or the joint.
