my 103lb dog tried running outside. i. caught her with my left hand. pain in wrist, palm, and middle finger and is very warm now. can't make a fist ?

Be seen: I would encourage you to be seen.  While there are many possibilities that could represent minimal injuries, you may very well have ruptured one if the flexor tendons in your hand, which would require surgery to fix.  When a flexor tendon injury occurs, patients have pain and swelling in the palm and are unable to make a fist like you are describing.

my hand hurts, but i can make a fist.  so, could this still be a broken hand?

POSSIBLE Fracture: A hand fracture usually causes pain and significant swelling/bruising at the fracture site.  You may still be able to make a fist but it would probably hurt a great deal.

i hurt my hand in gymnastics and my hand hurts under my pinky it hurts to move and to touch and to make a fist. what did i do to it?

Get an X-ray: Make sure you didn't break a bone. You should get an x-ray of the hand. Meanwhile, ice and tape the small and ring fingers together.

Inflammation: Some kind of an inflammation must be causing the pain, redness or tingling?, it may be tendinitis, a soft tissue injury, gout, fracture. Only way is to be examined. Meanwhile try aleve (naproxen) twice a day if not contraindicated.

i was stocking the walkin cooler at work, and i came out all of a sudden, and instant pain and stiffness in my non dominant hand. there is no fever, loss of grip, and i cant make a fist?

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor. You may start with the employee health department of your company and see if they will refer you to a neurologist.

Polyarthralgia: Onset of pain in multiple joints is most likely viral of some type. Although some type of rheumatic problem possible.

i broke my 4th metacarpal shaft in a fight. its been 2 weeks and i cant even make a fist. no surgery, how vulnerable is my hand in the future striking?

Fracture of ring met: The bone will heal completely whether or not surgery is performed, so ... One will eventually have a completely sound hand for striking. The main difference has to do with finger function. ,as displaced or angulated fractures will affect finger mobility.

Trigger finger: Is a common cause of this complaint. There is limited  mobility in the finger, pain where the finger  meets the palm, often called the finger palm crease,  pressure causing pain can be a sign of stenosing tenosynovitis or trigger finger

it  is treated by antiinflammatories, corticosteriod injection and perhaps surgery if symptoms do not go away.

Many causes: Many possibilities, cannot to say what is going on without seeing your hands and evaluating. Difficulty making a fist could be arthritis or inflammation in the joints, or irritation/inflammation in the tendons on the back of the hand, or stress injury on the hand, or infection of the skin, and more.

what would make it very painful to move your hand or make a fist?

Accepted Answer

Injury/bruising?: Have you injured it by lifting/straining, overusing it?  If so, ice or heat to the area may help.  Could also be due to arthritis or pinched nerve.  If not improving in a few days, see a doctor.  Good luck!
