i had a ct scan and it was all good but it did say mild thickening of the wall of the mid sigmoid colon, probably due to muscular hypertrophy. what does this mean and is it serious? went in to check for diverticulitis and i had a very mild case?

: CT scan is not the best test to rule out colon cancer. A colonoscopy is the optimum way to screen for colon cancer.

: That term by itself is not specific.. it means the inside lining of colon in the sigmoid colon was “red” rather than normal “pink”. It could be irritation, infection, inflammation. Would advise discuss with your doctor regarding the results as it pertains to your case and any biopsy results if performed.

Ulcerative Colitis: Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that can have ulceration and decreased vascular patterns in the sigmoid colon. Common symptoms are weight loss, frequent diarrhea (usually bloody) & abdominal pain. Uc occurs when your immune system cannot control the inflammation.  See your doctor immediately if you are having these symptoms.

Diverticula: Most americans have diverticula, little outpouchings in the colon wall. They rarely cause problems but can get  infected, diverticulitis, or cause significant lower GI bleeding. However, most of us do not develop these. The best thing for you to do is eat a high fiber diet and try to prevent constipation. However, in reality we do not recommend avoiding any particular food to prevent problems.

CT scan finding: This sounds like a result from a ct scan. Okay to talk with your doc about this result. Depending on your symptoms, age, and history it may not have much meaning. However, it may need further evaluation, colonoscopy, lab tests, if you have lower colon symptoms, blood in stool, weight loss, change in bowels, fever, pain. Be well.

why could my doc not easily remove a 1/2 inch sessile polyp on the sigmoid colon?  what type of doc can do it?

Sessile = flat: Sessile polyps are flat, which makes it very difficult (but not impossible) to remove. However, they can usually be biopsied to determine if (pre)cancerous or not. This is where the gastroenterologist comes in handy. Realistically, it comes down to experience as newly minted docs may not have skills of seasoned ones. But in general, gastroenterologist is specialist to go to for colonoscopy.

Accepted Answer

Fold thickening: There are numerous causes of fold thickening, including inflammatory, infectious, vascular, and neoplastic.  Sometimes the fold thickening seen on CT is not real, a false abnormality due to incomplete bowel dissension.  Your doctor, in the context of your entire clinical picture, can best determine how significant it is.  Colonoscopy may be useful if you have not had one.
