i have had bad muscle spasms in the middle of my back and when laying down at night my legs and sometimes my whole body goes numb. why?

Sounds like Sciatica: ...But, how long had this been going on? Any trauma history? Weakness? Lots of questions that a good physical exam and some imaging studies should answer.  Normal aging can provoke all kinds of complaints that usually respond to simple treatments.  I'd see my doctor if i was concerned.

Hand & leg: Odd association. Possibly a metabolic, calcium or magnesium or potassium issue. A more rare central nervous system or vascular issue may be considered. Get checked if it gets worse.

could i have multiple sclerosis even if my mri was normal? i have a lot of the symptoms (muscle spasm, weakness, tingling down my back and legs), but my mri didnt show anything. can an mri miss ms?

This : This is very, very tricky. Yes, there are reported cases of mri-negative ms, but they are very rare, so it is paramount to rule out other conditions. It also helps if you get your MRI done on a 3 tesla magnet, which provides higher resolution and better detail than lower strength magnets.

Several things: Get eval first to assure no acute herniations causing nerve impingement. Meds, heat, therapy, c an all help depending on the diagnosis. best wishes.

Rest and stay in the: Splint or cast that has been given to you, as these last for maybe a week or so. Muscle relaxers would be helpful.
If no relief after a few days or if getting worse, check with your orthopod, as the fx bones may have lost the position, is gotten displaced.

Possibly: If you are exercising and having acute pain while doing the exercises, you may need to rethink this activity. Also if you have severe pain or prolonged pain the next day after exercise you may be overdoing it. Talk to your doctor  about it.

Three thoughts: This could be lumbar erector spine strain, trochanteric bursitis or something related to the hip musculature. If it persists beyond one week, you might want to seek medical attention for X-rays or MRI scans.
