Possibly: Anatomically the arms receive their control of sensation from the neck.  Nerves that are irritated at the level of the neck often only result in pain traveling into one arm and not both.  Given your age, it would be unlikely that there is significant degeneration to cause symptoms in both arms.  Discuss with your pcp.

Osteopathic Exam: For pain from neck/shoulder 'spasm,' most available treatments are symptomatic.If you've had many tests-lumbar puncture, MRI, etc. which haven't found the 'cause' but have ruled out serious disease, a good history &amp; osteopathic hands-on exam can often find the cause: usually rib or spine malfunction. Manipulation can often fix it.Rarely, neuropathic pain is cause.Neuroprolotherapy may help.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. You may take OTC pain medication, acetaminophen. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated.

Pin down cause: Glad surgery worked, but talk to your doc about MRI of neck and thoracic spines, and maybe EMG of brachial plexus.  An experienced physical therapist could be very helpful.

can tizandine be used for muscle spasms n my neck & shoulders ? dr also gave me trazodone for sleep can they be taken together?

Yes and Yes: Tizanidine is a muscle relaxer effective for muscle spasms.  Trazadone is an anti-depressant typically prescribed as a sleep aid more than for depression.  Both are sedating but most become accustomed to the sedating effects.  The sedation is likely to be additive so your prescribing dr needs to know you're taking both.  S/he will likely  use a lower starting dose and a slower up-taper

Several things: You need a thorough work up for this pain.  There could be a variety of problems that could be causing your pain.  I would seek out a good local orthopaedic surgeon and get an appropriate workup and treatment plan.

Muscle : Muscle spasm are related to many thing, they usually " hurt" and the patient does complain of pain and discomfort. If this is not the case , anatomical alterations of the cervical spine might give you an impresion of muscle shortening if that is what you are refering to and is positional. Diffuse bilateral changes in the neck and the face and head are migh be related to a myofascial syndrome , but again this again will bgive pain and discomfort . It is hard to figure out what might be happening to your aunt . She will have to attend a medical consultation in order to clarify what is happening.

Cervical spine issue: Muscle spasm is often a secondary response to another problem. It that area, cervical disc issues and/or facet joint problems could be causing the muscles to spasm. Alternatively, repetitive activity or poor posture could be placing excessive strain on these muscles, causing them to spasm. Ice/heat and NSAIDs can relieve symptoms, but working w/ a physician and/or PT can help discover the cause.
