i have been on iv solumedrol (methylprednisolone) for four days so far for multiple sclerosis. today, multiple lymph nodes became swollen/painful in my neck/chin. concern?

Pharyngitis: Tell your doctor, could be pharyngitis, viral or bacterial, whether was that secondary to solumedrol (methylprednisolone) or not, we don't no, as steroids  cause  immunosuppression, at any rate, rest, fluids, salt water gargles, till you see your doctor who may prescribe an antibiotic, wish you wellness

: At rest the nodes are about 1 cm in size. When they are working they enlarge and if infected/overwhelmed they can be golf ball size or larger &amp; would usually be painful.

Many options: With the history of trauma, perhaps you need to have a dental exam.  Are the nodes present on both sides of your jaw?  Regardless, you need a careful exam to determine what is going on.  Good luck.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc.  When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Get a medical examin: If the nodes are new, painless, not related to a sore throat, you should have your doctor to examine you and advice further. If the nodes are small(less than 1 to 1.5cm(half an inch) you can watch them for one month to see if they go down or get bigger. If they are getting bigger then you have to be concerned and must see your doctor then.

Lots of doctors: A good family doc or internal medicine doc could certainly help.  If the swollen glands are by your neck, an ENT would help.  If you need a biopsy, a general surgeon could fill the bill

: I consider those of normal size (not swollen) and they are usually easily found in the neck. Unless there were other history or findings that suggest a problem I would ignore them. You don't try to fix normal.

Exam: You should get a thorough medicial examination and blood testing for illnesses of the blood and immune system. Call for an appointment ASAP.

Depends: The treatment would depend upon the diagnosis. The best route of action is to speak with your physician. If the nodes are only slightly enlarged then monitoring may be the best option; if they are large and accessible then biopsy may be the way to go.
