It : It sounds like you have significant multilevel degenerative disease of the spine.   I would recommend seeing a spine doctor and spine surgeon since you are in severe pain even though you are undergoing conservative treatment (anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer and physical therapy).  You may benefit from steroid injections or surgery.  I would recommend discussing work restrictions with that doctor.  Good luck!

MRI: Mri of the lumbar spine is an excellent exam for evaluating the cause of pain.  It can show herniated discs, fractured, spinal cord pathology, compressed nerve roots, masses, previous surgical changes, and disease of the surrounding structures.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Most MRI units do not have the power and/or not set up sensitivity wise to detect most soft tissue injuries unless severe.  There really is no indication to diagnose this condition by MRI as it can be made clinically and treated with good success.  It is not indicated and a waste of money to get a MRI for this diagnosis.

alot of pain since lumbar puncture last year. dr ordered 2 mri's- pelvic and lower back- can't they see everything from just one test vs 2?

Accepted Answer

Depends: MRI is a great test.  However, the resolution changes depending on the area scanned.  The bigger the area, the lower the resolution (detail increases with higher resolution).  To improve resolution, they need to focus the MRI on the area of concern.  I am guessing they included the pelvis to make sure something else wasn't causing the pain, outside the area of the lumbar puncture.

PLZ be precise.: Hemangioma is a benign tumor which does not need to be followed up with another mri.
You mentioned of "deterioration of disc". What exactly the radiologist wrote?

i had a lumbar mri due to increased pain and found a lot of degenerative changes. it also found the following: there is a focus of uniform t2 prolongation in the medial lower pole of the right kidney measuring 20 mm in diameter. what does it mean?

Mass: This is a situation where your physician should sit down with the radiologist who interpreted the study and get a differential diagnosis as well as suggestions from the radiologist for any other diagnostic testing or recommendations for consultation with a specialist - a urologist, for example.  The finding on your MRI shows a mass and further investigation is needed.

With a: normal lumbar MRI, the next step is to schedule a visit with a neurologist to investigate causes of your "peripheral neuropathy".   The possible causes are many, and require a thorough history and exam.

Maybe: Cyst at s2 (racepinephrine) sounds like a tarlov cyst. Thats a fluid filled sac that normally doesnt cause pain and requires no treatment. On rare occasions it can be large enough to put pressure on nerves or erode bone to cause pain. Therefore i would have a physician tell you why you're having low back pain before you see a chiropractor. If the cyst is incidental like it most likely is, doing some traction is ok.

Leg pain: Tarlov cysts a commonly seen on mris.   They often do not cause pain.  Typically there is something else going on that causes pain such as a disc or arthritis pinching a nerve-which is a good question for your doc.
