is there such a thing as mri-safe total hip replacement? i am concerned if they put metal into my hip, can't mri again. i regular mri brain.

Not to worry: All modern hip and knee replacements are MRI compatible.  Either titanium or stainless steel.

Accepted Answer

No, quality affected: Total hip replacement is not a contraindication for MRI.  However, the metal in the prosthesis can significantly degrade the images, especially directly around the prosthesis.  If the pathology of interest is far away from the hip, it may not matter.  If it is close to the joint it will.  Titianium and Cobalt-Chrome have much less problem than other metals.

what to do if i had total hip replacement last year. why is is that you cannot have an mri or does anyone know?

MRI after THA: You should be able to have a MRI on any other part of your body without problems.  With newer programs being developed you will be able to have a MRI of your replaced hip.

Probably: Since do not have access to your medical records and imaging studies cannot possibly comment on your condition, but the suggestion the doctor gave you sounds very reasonable.

Disk or tumor: This is a no brainer- you already have a history of tumor and if they are saying it could be herniated disc or tumor you need to find out - the latter needs to be treated, the former treatment not needed unless you have symptoms that do not respond to regular management. While you are at high risk there are procedures that can be done with local and minor sedation to assist in the diagnosis

MRI: Yes, after joint replacement (or hardware for fractures), you can still get a mri.

MRI COMPATIBLE: Titanium implants are MRI compatible. People with nontitanium implants should inform the radiologist or technician prior to the procedure; however, most joint implants are firmly attached inside bone and will not pose a serious problem. People with internal metallic surgical staples from healed surgeries should also inform the radiologist or technician prior to the procedure.

Fluid in your joint: This indicates that you have a small amount of fluid in your joint.    It does not necessarily indicate a problem.  However, since your surgeon ordered an MRI postoperatively, he is concerned about a complication, such as infection

what non surgical releif is there in lieu of hip replacement ? i have pain in my left leg after i stand up. when i walk many times i limp..one dr. said my hip cartilege is gone  after she looked at the xray. but my mri showed spinal  nuerosis.

There : There are many things that may be of benefit prior to hip replacement surgery.  Using a cane in the opposite hand of the affected hip can decrease the weight applied to the hip by 50%.  Anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen and alleve can be of benefit as well as physical therapy.  Occasionally a steroid injection in the joint can give temporary relief of pain depending on how severe the arthritis in the hip is.

how soon after hip replacement can i have another surgery like liposuction? i can't have the lipo first due to emergency hip replace needed

Accepted Answer

6 months: At least 6 months. The person you want to ask that question is the orthopedic surgeon doing the hip replacement. He/she should make the call. Also, the ortho doc will probably cover you with antibiotics to prevent infection of the hip replacement. Also make sure the liposuction doc knows about the hip replacement.
