Killing germs: Many mouth rinses do contain alcohol but not more are coming out without alcohol so you have options. Make sure you check labels and ask your dentist for correct mouth rinse.

Yes: Most mouthwashes contain alcohol.  Some contain more than others.  Alcohol has a slight disinfectant ability but it is there as a solvent.  Scope will contain alcohol unless noted as alcohol free.  There are several mouthwashes that do not contain alcohol, like crest prohealth.

i've got a few questions: 1) why is it better to use mouthwash with alcohol in it.2) won't that make you dehydrated?

A few answers: 1) the alcohol in the mouthwash helps control the bacteria around and between your teeth. Not sure if it is "better". All additional products will help along with proper brushing and flossing.
2) you do not drink the mouthwash. Unlike drinking alcoholic drinks that result in increased urination and possible dehydration after processing, the mouthwash is not absorbed into your body.

Mouth rinsing: it's great that you are trying so hard to keep your teeth clean. i prefer a mouthrinse without alcohol, but is it's once a day and you are using a fluoride rinse at night, it should work out well

Alcohol in eye: Rinse the eye out thoroughly with tepid (luke warm) water for several minutes. If there is still pain or burning, have someone drive you to an ophthalmologist for further treatment. Do not try to drive yourself.

i've read mouthwashes w/alcohol can do more harm than good. the brand i've used lately contains alcohol & i've noticed my mouth feels drier & gums/tongue/inside of cheeks feel irritated. i've stopped using it. how long for mouth to heal/feel better?

Quickly: The thoughts about alcohol relate to its tendency to dry/dehydrate the tissues. Other alcohol free products can be just as effective in removing germs without it. The affected tissues of the mouth are renewed regularly in the normal body processes. If you have mouth issues lasting more than a week after the change I would see your dentist/doc for an evaluation.

: The alcohol used in mouthwash is the same as that is used in alcoholic beverages people consume on a regular basis. I would not waste any energy worrying about this level of ethyl alcohol exposure. There are other types of alcohol (methanol) that are deadly, but this is not considered so unless you consume mass quantities.

is it safe to use mouthwash that has alcohol when you have braces on?

Yes - But NOT Ideal!: Alcohol based mouthwashes tend to dry out the mouth.  A dry mouth is more prone to bacteria growth, which leads to increased cavities!

a Fluoride mouthwash without alcohol will not inhibit saliva production.  Saliva actually helps clear your mouth of bacteria and protects your teeth.  Additionally, Fluoride will strengthen and protect your teeth while in braces!

as long as the mouthwash had no alcohol products in it,, does that mean it's safe if i accidently swallow some?
