how can i motivate myself to bring about a behavior change?

Trade old for new!: Get clarity about what behavior change you want and why you want it. It will be difficult or impossible to make the change if you are doing this for someone else or resent "having to" make the change.  Look carefully at what must be given up in order to change this behavior.  There are only 24 hours in a day!  you'll be trading old behavior for new . Make a plan, implement it, and stick to it!

18mo som, been vomiting 1x a day last few days. no behavior change. what is concerning me, is he brings up bits of clearly identifiable food eaten 8-10 hours ago that show no signs of any digestion.

Time to see an MD: Your concern is valid.  Your son either has decreased bowel motility, an infection or partial bowel obstruction amongst other maladies. Vomiting undigested food for a day or two might be okay, but several days in a row requires visit to MD. Some things are easier to repair sooner rather than later. Might be benign or might be serious. Don't wait and see.  Trust your instincts.

Great idea: It would really help in identifying if there are any other areas that can help the child succeed. This is not my specialty but I have relied on those skilled pediatricians in helping with difficult cases.

You choose: Starting point:   what are you calling childish, what about it bothers you?  Where do you do it? When? How does it serve you?  Next point: what do you want from yourself instead, why do you want it? Next point: mentally rehearse new behaviors in the presence of old triggers until they become familiar to you. Your behavior isn't happening to you, but through you.  Identify and choose new behaviors.

Belief system: We do everything for infants when they cry.This sets up a belief system that we are their servant & only exist to please them.When they begin walking we begin to ignore them, since they can get around & play.They don't like it.Acting out is an amplification of crying behavior.They do it to get noticed & get their way.Parents may find it cute & send a smile their way while saying no-this confuses.

Self-observation: You don't say what type of behavior you find alarming -- so this could possibly be healthy insight as much as embarrassment.  And it seems you're asking for help,  which speaking with a therapist could provide.  Have you gotten some type of wake-up call from someone? Incidentally found while obtaining echocardiogram for murmur or during sports clearance echo, or echo for evaluating supraventricular tachycardia, counterclockwise loop on vectocardiogram for primum asd.
