Most: There are many variations in the clinical manifestations of mono and it may not cause any symptoms.  Most people with clinical mono do have enlargements of lymph nodes, spleen and liver and these subside on their own with the natural resolution of the infection in an otherwise healthy person.

is mono ever deadly? i was exposed to someone with mono and now am paranoid. somebody told me if i get mono my spleen will enlarge and i will be hospitalized. is this true?

Non lethal: See you HCP,for a mono spot test to,determine if you are infected. The symptoms are aggravating but tend to be self limiting, and non lethal if you have been infected by the virus.

Yes: The exposure to avoid includes risk of trauma as might be from falling from a horse, bicycle,  or traumatic tackle in a soccer/football game.  You can sleep however you wish.

Not likely: The splenic enlargement due to mono should subside in a matter of weeks.  In the meantime avoid activities that may risk trauma to the abdomen in general and spleen in particular.  If the enlargement has not subsided in three months, consult your doctor.

If your infection: is controlled, your spleen enlargement will eventually resolve.  But it might take a few months.  If you are having difficulty breathing, it could be from another cause.

Not usually: Occasionally you can get hepatitis in association with epstein barr virus infection (infectious mononucleosis) but the liver is seldom enlarged even with this.

No: However, you can use positions that would not put direct pressure on your abdominal.

Time: The spleen will likely recover along with the disease process. In the meanwhile, don't participate in activities which would dispose you to abdominal trauma.

Peaks early: With this disorder, you usually see this side effect by the end of the first week of symptoms (which is when they come in for diagnosis) with a gradual decline over the course of the illness. By three weeks in I am seldom ever able to feel an enlarged spleen, even on kids who had it earlier.

my son was diagnosed with mono today last week he lifted a heavy nightstand i am scared that maybe he caused a spleen issue without us knowing. dr felt spleen today said it didnt feel enlarged could it just be festering?

: Spleen rupture is a rare complication of mono if one has splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) and engages in a full contact sports or suffers other abdominal trauma. Splenomegaly does not happent in all mono infections but maybe half of them.
