Valium: Is considered medium duration and more effective (I.e. addictive) than clonazepam.  In terms of efficacy, Valium should work better for sleep.  But there are safer less addictive alternatives for treating insomnia such as Ambien, Remeron, Trazodone and even antipsychotics such as Seroquel.  Please see your healthcare provider about these options.

No reported risk BUT: It's really important to work w/ your Dr on these medications. This one time probably is okay to help yourself but please plan to be a team and get advice for the future. I think it should include CBT therapy to learn skills to manage anxiety. It makes the drugs more effective and lowers need for them.

Under guidance of md: Sedative dependencies are, by definition, dangerous should the drug be stopped abruptly. A knowledgeable physician needs to prescribe the drug, be aware of the potential for dependency in that particular person, follow them closely, never refill a prescription without a face-to face visit, know the signs of and potential for dependency each case. Do not try to phase this out on your own. C ur doc.

Alternative: If another medication in this class (benzodiazepines) is being sought, it may depend on the reason why you need to come off Klonopin (clonazepam). Valium has many break down products &amp; is not always a great addition if medical problems. Ativan/lorazepam unlikely to have negative impact on the liver (unlike some of the others) but is relatively short acting. Please additional information on reason. Thanks!

Tapering recommended: Tapering is recommended for long-term use of benzodiazepines, such as klonapin or ativan, (lorazepam) as stopping abruptly leads to withdrawal symptoms.  These include anxiety, sweating, palpitations, hallucinations, psychosis, and seizures, which can be life-threatening.

Myoclonus: Both medications have shown favorable response for myoclonus, both can eventually show tolerance & limited response. If your doctor recommended klonopin, (clonazepam) it is worth a try.

is it safe (non lethal) to have 2 drinks with 0.5mg klonopin? i've done it several times. is valium safer than say xanax (alprazolam) w/regards to having 2 drinks?

None are good: None of these are good to mix w/ alcohol. It may never kill you, but it's not safe and depending on other variations in your input (diet, illnesses, state of general health) it may suddenly be more risky. Talk frankly w/ your Dr and consider quitting drinking while you need the drug treatment. Talk therapy is am option and CBT helps anxiety mgmt best!
