Acute mania meds: Atypical antipsychotics have been increasingly used for (and gaining FDA approval for) acute mania. Both meds mentioned (abilify (aripiprazole) &amp; paliperidone) are in this class and can be used to treat acute mania. Other atypicals are also used. Li, VPA, and some typical antipsychotics are FDA approved in acute mania as well. Talk with your doc to make the right right choice for your specific case :)

Yes frequently: Lithium, tegretol, depacote &lamictal r the most used mood stabilizers-some pts do better with one & not well or react badly to another--if someone in your family is doing great on Lamictal it is likely that you will do well on it too-.

Yes: The DSM-4 did not, but DSM-5 removed that oversight.  There is very little real world distinction between the two classifications apart from full mania or hypomania.  Might even be the same illness but simply a matter of severity on a spectrum (like Rheumatoid Arthritis for instance).  Please visit with a capable psychiatrist for top notch care!

Absolutely: Using stimulants in people with Bipolar Disorder requires extra care and monitoring. Sudden changes starting or stopping can make moods swing wildly in either direction. This is one group of patients that should continue meds or if want a break in summer, wean off over a week or two and only if on a mood stabilizing medication.

This depends on: Many things.  First, it depends on your own lifestyle and taking care of yourself by complying with medications & follow-up visits with your psychiatrist.  Work with any therapists recommended too.  Also, getting regular rest and exercise.  Staying away from recreational drugs & alcohol.  Eating healthy diet.  All these can work together to keep mood swings at bay.

Proof is in pudding: Everybody is different and there is no one size fits all. When possible I like to work towards weaning people off the short acting benzodiazepines ( Xanax)
