Cardiologist: While mitral valve prolapse with some regurgitation is not uncommon in your age group, scarring of the aortic valve isn't and warrants an evaluation by a cardiologist. I would prefer to see trivial regurgitation of the tricuspid and pulmonary valves in the report as mild regurgitation sounds more significant although in your case these valves are probably OK.

Findings. Symptoms?: These are findings on the echocardiogram in the view of the Cardiologist who was looking at the pictures. The real question is why the echocardiogram was ordered to begin with. Were you having symptoms? What problem was the test trying to identify? Generally, trace valve regurgitation is "physiologic" - that is, common &amp; symptom-less. Sclerosis means thickening - so the mitral valve could be stiff

Yes: Sclerosis is a hardening, in this case a hardening of the mitral valves. These valves are basically skin flaps that separate the left chambers of the heart. Sclerosis prevents the valves from operating freely and can lead to backflow of blood in the heart. Simply put, your heart will not operate efficiently when under stress.

Not likely: Without knowing the etiology of the mitral regurgitation it is difficult to accurately answer your question however in general mitral regurgitation does not improve over time. It is either stable without change or gets worse. There are medications that will decrease the amount of regurgitation but not cure it. Follow routinely with your health care provider and I am certain you will be OK.

It depends: Calcification of the mitral valve can lead to stiff leaflets of the valve.  This can cause the valve to not open enough (stenosis) , leak (regurge) or a combo of both.  Typically this can be handled with medications.  However, it can continue to worsen to the point that it affects the heart.  Then you may need to have mitral valve surgery (probably replacement).

Need follow-up: You do not need to worry at this time, however you should not forget that you have mild mitral regurgitation. Many people have mild mitral regurgitation and never require any treatments. In some cases, it can progress to moderate or severe. The best thing is for you to keep your heart healthy by exercising 30 minutes a day 4 or 5 times a week. If your body is healthy, your heart is likely to be.

Occasionally: Most patients with mitral valve prolapse remain quite stable over the duration of their lives. Rarely, there may be progressive mitral insufficiency depending if the valve degenerates over time or if there is an infection on the valve. The optimal strategy is to have periodic echocardiograms done in the same laboratory to ensure consistency. Talk to your doctor.
