NO, less likey: Shingles is not contagious except to someone who has never had chickenpox. Historically, the usual mode of transmission was a grandparent developed shingles (shedding chickenpox virus) and gave it to young children who had never had chickenpox. Now varicella vaccine is given to most 1 year olds. Your immunity should be moderate-high after having shingles in past unless immunocompromised.

Varivax reaction: You can give him some claritin (loratadine) (loratidine) syrup once daily for 3 days and also can use topical hydrocrtisone 1%. They will be gone in a few days. :)

Degree: The regular wild chickenpox will give a kid 50-250 spots along with fever and itching that can be tiring. Some patients will develop secondary skin infections like the flesh eating bacteria. Some adults can develop a severe chickenpox pneumonia and die. The idea of mild or severe is relative and usually defined by the person talking about it.

Chickenpox: Sxs of chicken pox include a rash that develops first into blisters and then into scabs, fever, feeling tired, decreased appetite and headache.
     Chickenpox  complications can include: pneumonia, sepsis, infections of joints/ bones, brain inflammation & bleeding difficulties.

The question is ???: People seldom went in for medical evaluation 35 yrs ago when they thought the problem was something simple like chickenpox. It was easy to over diagnose when only a few spots were present. People do get it for the first time as adults & it can be quite harsh. Many have significant disability & a mild encephalitis while rarely a pneumonia can require intensive care. Most recover without problems.

Until no new sores.: Chicken pox, which you can still get mildly even if you've been vaccinated, is contagious until all the sores are crusted over and there are no new ones.  If you see any new sores at all, it's still contagious and other people are at risk.
