: How far apart in time were the tests done? If the valve is not increasing in thickness or calcification over time, it is less worrisome, given there is no evidence of stenosis or regurgitation. Yes: Most people are speaking about atherosclerosis, when talking about heart disease.  Calcification in the thoracic aorta is not necessarily atherosclerosis; however, atherosclerosis is often found upon further investigation.  Other risk factors that should be addressed include smoking cessation and blood pressure control.  Your primary physician can manage these and discuss further testing.

hi, i recently had a ct scan for pain in my hips, lower back and knees. on the report it says i have minimal calcific artherosclerotic involve of abdominal aorta and iliac arteries. i am 40 is this serious? should i see a specialist?

: No, those vascular changes are common findings on CT scan. You do not need to see a specialist for that. To delay the progression of atherosclerotic vascular disease you need to be active, eat healthy diet (low salt, low saturated fat diet), keep BMI less than 25 if possible, and avoid high blood pressure.

: I assume you don't smoke. ? Family history of cardiovascular disease. This represents arteriosclerosis despite being relatively young&amp; occurs in only 16% of women age 50. I recommend being checked for risk factors such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes. I also recommend an ultrasound of your carotid arteries &amp;an EKG as well as a treadmill stress test. Discuss these suggestions with your MD

Calcification: Calcification signifies that you have arteriosclerosis but mild calcification of the aortic arch is not hemodynamically not significant and no surgery is needed unlike having an aneurysm. You do have to be mindful of your blood pressure, serum cholesterol and other lipid levels, abstinence from smoking,etc and having regular checkups by your physician as well as reporting any suspicious symptoms.

Unremarkable: Most of the studies will cite unremarkable at the end. Echocardiogram is a suboptimal test for detection of coronary artery disease and it only implies it when significant wall motion abnormalities are noted in the presence of known coronary artery disease and previous heart attacks. It cannot rule out coronary artery disease otherwise.

Accepted Answer

Aorta: It means the aorta is not following its usual course in the chest and the calcification implies there is atherosclerotic change in the aorta. This doesn't mean the aorta isn't doing its job but it also isn't absolutely normal. You should discuss the implications with your doctor.
