i had a microdiskectomy 5 days ago for sciatica & it has been getting worse every day (now more than before surgery). is this normal? will it go away?

MISS: Micro discectomy surgery is simply the removal of the disc using the microscope to illuminate and magnify the operative site. It may used thru a conventional incision or thru minimally invasive techniques tubes as small as 18 mm. When utilized thru a tubular system or other similar retractor system it is called minimally invadive spinal surgery (miss).

Take it easy: Microdiscectomy is surgery where they make a very tiny incision to take out your herniated disc to relieve pressure on the nerves. Recovery is faster than traditional surgery. But you should avoid strenuous actvities, bending turning twisting prolonged driving for some time, also you have to strengthen the muscles around your back and the legs. Hope that helps.

Back surgery: When it comes to back surgery there has been little change in the feeling that one third of patients will get better one third will stay the same and one third will get worse. I hope you're not in this latter group. It is a shame that people don't seem to have and often don't have access to the surgeons that did the procedure . You really need to communicate with the person that did the procedure.

Microdisectomy: I would contact the surgeon that did the original surgery for a reassessment of the disc.  It is possible that you might have herniated another disc fragment.

Ask your doc: The resumption of any activity after a specialized procedure is best monitored by the doc who did the surgery. We have no way of knowing your basic history/exam and or additional parameters that would require caution.

Disc Re-herniation: There is approximately a 10% chance that a disc ca re-rupture after a successful first operation.  Development of identical symptoms of pain, numbness, and/or weakness would be worrisome and indicate a need for a MRI with gadolinium IV contrast.
