Your Dx is benign: Peripheral microcystoid retinal degeneration's considered a benign &amp; not infrequently found condition by ophthalmologists doing routine patient exams.  However, there's a condition known as degenerative retinoschisis that can occur as a result of microcystoid degeneration. That CAN cause visual loss. What does the eye doc say? Not quite: Lattice is the response in the peripheral retina to thinning and stress.  There are other causes of retinal thinning and most retinal thinning does not lead to lattice.  So they are not the same thing.

Lattice can be associated with round retinal holes from the thinning and retinal tears at the edge-this can result in retinal detachment.

Lattice degeneration: Is a process where an area of retina where either abnormal vitreous traction is placed on the retina or there is an area of missing 'internal limiting membrane'. Confluent areas may join in some people as you asked and lattice is associated with up to 40% of retinal detachments (rd). Atrophic retinal holes may complicate areas of lattice thus increasing risk of rd.

Need observation: Lattice degeneration and blows to the head both increase your risk of retinal tears and detachment.  If you have no symptoms, like new floaters or flashes, then it is unlikely that there is anything going on.  However a prudent person would have a dilated retinal examination by an ophthalmologist.

Lattice Degeneration: Is not likely caused by impaired circulation.  The cause is not known.  It occurs frequently in very near-sighted people and may be a risk factor for retinal detachment.

Unrelated: Lattice is a developmental change in the peripheral retina - a response to stretching with scar formation.  This is a common site of retinal holes.  There is no relationship to the sculpting of the cornea done in lasik surgery.

No....: There is nothing you can take for it. Important to have annual eye exams.

Accepted Answer

Not known: This is not known.  However it seems that characteristics of the retina have more to do with the occurrence of a retinal tear than the characteristics of the vitreous.  That is, a thin myopic retina is more likely to tear than a thicker one.
