Metronidazole: Metronidazole is excellent to fight diverticuilar infection; it eliminates anerobic bacteria; dosing depends a bit upon liver function, body size, and age - but the typical dose is 250-500 mg three times daily.  Most adults with normal liver functions will receive 500 mg three times a day.

i had unprotected sex with a new partner while on day 4 of taking 500mg of metronidazole. i continued my dosage as usual. will i reinfect myself wbv?

Not sure: Reinfection can occur with a new partner if that person is infected themselves.  It can also occur depending on the type of sex itself. Check it out with your gyn.

Yes: This combination is used often especially in recurrent episodes or treatment resistant to a single or 2 drugs. Don;t stop anything unless you talk it over with your physician.

found out i'm about 4 wks pregnant & i was taking metronidazole 500 mg for bv is it safe to finish my dosage 2 pills for 7 days i'm on the 7th day?

Relax: It is too late to worry about it now since you have taken 6 days of it anyway. Although it is recommended to avoid in the first trimester, it is generally considered safe and no studies have established a solid link of it to any problems. We frequently prescribe the oral version to women in first trimester and I have not seen any problems in the last ten years of my practice.

my gyno prescribed metronidazole for bv. a few days into my dosage, i started experiencing uti-like symptoms such as frequent urination and an increased feeling of needing to urinate. can the meds cause this and does this stop when i finish the meds?

: Metronidazole doesn't generally cause such side effects. Best to check with your doctor, and perhaps (at her discretion) to have a urinalysis and culture to check on UTI possibility -- especially if you've had UTIs previously and the symptoms are the same. (MTZ is not effective against most UTI bacteria, so it is possible to develop UTI while taking it.)

: I would never self treat an 8 yo kid for an ulcer based on symptoms you decide are relevant. I never saw one in an 8 yo in 4 decades of practice. If you truly believe it have the kid evaluated by a pedi-GI doctor who can do a endoscopy and validate or exclude the label.

Metronidazole dosing: There is a range of doses for metronidazole. Indeed, it is often given three times a day. I think your doctor adjusted your dose to 400 mg -probably based on your [thin] build. So your total dose for one day is 1,200 mg. A common side effect is nausea, particularly if you take too much. If you have questions about your medication -you should definitely talk to the doctor that prescribed it.
