hi, i have been experiencing an itch down there ever since i have had sex 6 months ago. the itch tends to come and go. i have no other symptoms. i have tried otc meds for thrush and have also been on metronidazole but it didn't help. ?

Azole resistance?: There are several casues of vaginal area itching. Non-response to standard OTC yeast (thrush) meds means either that you have a non-yeast problem, or infection with candida of a type resistnat to the standard "azole" drugs. See a doctor for accurate diagnosis. If yeast is confirmed, as for a treatment that works against resistant strains, such as nystatin, micafungin, and others. Good lucki.

Mixed messages...: Metronidazole does not treat yeast. Assuming you were following a doctor's advice, she obviously thought you had something in addition to yeast, probably bacterial vaginosis or maybe trichomonas. Metronidazole can trigger oral yeast (thrush), but the fluconazole should have prevented that. Not all white stuff in the mouth is yeast. Return to your doctor to be rechecked. Good luck.

gynae says she thinks i could have chronic thrush and maybe even vag bacterium. i'm still on metronidazole. which one is causing the burning of the vag? the lab result said scanty growth of escherichia coli. which test confirms chronic or vag  bacter?

: Confusing wording. Scanty growth of e.coli &amp; yeast (thrush) in a vaginal smear are not unusual or diagnostic for anything. Irritation in the area can come from the yeast (thrush) or bacteria. Chronic is just a term meaning long term, often more than 3 weeks. You need to confirm the presumed diagnosis from your doc if she has one. It is not clear from the data provided.

i've just had metronidazole as treatment for bv, but now i've got a lot of yellow discharge, very slight odour and itching. i've not had sexual intercourse since i was tested and came back as bv. can it be thrush? do i need to call my gp again?

: Need to contact your Gynecologist. May be relapse of BV, in which case you need a longer or stronger course of Rx. May be Candida, may be Trichimonas, may be, may be. Need a lab- confirmed Dx and treatment based on that

Unlikely: Thrush would get better after the meds you mention not worse. The first thing that comes to mind is a vitamin B12 deficiency with these tongue changes. You need to have some testing done.

hello! i've intestinal candidiasis and my doctor told me to take fluconazole (50mg 7 days) and metronidazole (250 mg 13 days). should i take this?

It depends: How was  the diagnosis made. If you have had a biopsy (usually at endoscopy) that shows candidiasis or have a culture from the throat that is positive for candidiasis then treatment with Fluconazole is reasonable . If it is candidiasis in a stool culture, this can be a normal finding and does not need treatment. Finally, Metronidazole has no role in treatment of candidiasis.

Depends..: Intestinal candidiasis means you have candida in the intestinal tract. Whether this causes any problems is unclear. Will it hurt to treat it? No, only your pocket book. Will it make you feel better? Probably not.
