It is something to take very seriously.

Which one?: We give infants vaccine against the hemophyllis influenza type b germ , the primary cause of infant meningitis years ago. For whatever reason it becomes less of an issue after 6yo & the infant doses covered their vulnerable period. Pneumococcal vaccine is also given in infants & repeated for some adults. The Meningococcal vaccine is likely to give about 5 years of protection/dose.

Hopefully not: Meningitis is very obvious, with intense headache, neck pain and stiffness, fever, and perhaps confusion, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and vomiting.  However, cases of pneumonia may be complicated by sepsis and eventual brain infection or clinical brain toxicity, which is due to primary infection.

Yes: There are two Meningococcal vaccines available, and it is recommended to use the mpsv4 version in pregnancy. Thus, if you are uncertain whether you are pregnant that is the preferred vaccine. 

Regardless, if you have had recent unprotected sex (less than 72 hours ago), Plan B is safe to use and will not interfere, or be rendered ineffective by, the vaccine.

Test spinal fluid: The diagnosis of bacterial meningitis can be only made from examination of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF). CSF is obtained by a spinal tap. If the CSF shows bacteria by direct inspection of the stained specimen, or the culture of the CSF grows bacteria, then you make a diagnosis of bactrial meningitis.
