Test spinal fluid: The diagnosis of bacterial meningitis can be only made from examination of cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF). CSF is obtained by a spinal tap. If the CSF shows bacteria by direct inspection of the stained specimen, or the culture of the CSF grows bacteria, then you make a diagnosis of bactrial meningitis.
