It is: Appropriate doses of melatonin are generally safe in diabetes and heart disease.  It does slightly reduce clotting ability so is used with caution when on another blood thinner, and one should always notify prescribing doctors when considering a new OTC med/supplement.  3mg taken 4 hours before bed is the most effective studied dose of melatonin, and timed-release forms offer no additional benefit

: Sincethe FdA in the US doesn't investigate supplements we physicians are reluctant to ok them as possibilities of contaminants are real,. These could have harmful effects or interact with medications. Also effective  or recommended doses may be way off and claims of efficacy aren't proven. I don't recommend your taking any prescription or nonprescription meds without approval of your obstetrician

is it safe to take zoloft (sertraline) 50mg, donezepil 10mg and melatonin 5mg? getting confused more and more forgetful but dont know if it is the melatonin

Yes: Yes it's safe. If you feel like the melatonin is causing you side effects stop it and see if there is improvement. See your physician for further treatment but also make sure you are getting enough sleep at night.

are there any alternative sleep agents to melatonin? i've decided to quit melatonin 5mg after 3 years because it's contributing to my depression. without it i struggle to sleep for more than an hour before falling asleep. 31 yo m?

: Yes, OTC Benadryl has been used and Dramamine can induce drowsiness.  But far better is to stop sleep meds, which become futile over time and engage in a full Sleep Hygiene Program.  We can help (www.connect @healthtap.com)

REM sleep.: Sleeping pills will make rem sleep less likely.  There are sleep specialist and perhaps they can help you.  Make sure you are not using alcohol because it works to make you sleepy but will make your sleep cycle disruptive where you will not get the restful sleep. I would keep using melatonin but rezerem...It has rem in the name.  Also some of the older antidepressants at low doses are used also.

Melatonin: It makes no sense to take both together. One or the other should do fine.
