Weeks to months: After you treat scabies, the itching and the rash may take a couple of weeks to months before they go away.  But as long as you aren't getting new rashes, you should stop treating it with the cream.  Topical cortisone creams and anit-itch creams can help with the itch as can oral antihistamines.  I  recommend nonsedating antihistamines during the day:  loratidine, fexofenadine; Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night.

No medicine has been approved for infants under 8 weeks.  But the 1st line is Permethrin cream.  You also have to wash all clothes/bedding in very hot water (be careful).  Please see your doctor for treatment recs.

Permethrin: The treatment of choice in children is permethrin 5% cream. It is applied all over the body and face for infants, left on for 12 hours, and washed off.  Repeat this  in 1 week.

Depends: The residual itching and skin disturbance of scabies can take 6 or more weeks to heal. It is a body reaction to scabies fecal material deposited underneath the skin in their burrows.One time treatment with a good scabicide like permethrin 5% (left on 12 hrs))should be enough although re-treatment after 7 days is common. Repeat disease is common if re-exposed and develops quicker.

Anti itch cream/scab: No it is not a good idea.But you can take oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Hydroxyzine for itching during the treatment.

There are none: Scabies mites cannot be killed by over-the-counter meds. Prescriptions include: Permethrin cream 5%, crotamiton 10%, lindane 1%, sulfur ointment 5-10%, and oral ivernectin pills (off-label). The mites burrow under the skin, and look like small red raised bumps. Clothing and bedding from 2-3da before treatment should be washer in hot soapy water, dried in hot drier; or placed in airtight bag x 7da.

Give it time: Most scabies treatments, such as permethrin, work very well, but rash and itching still can continue as long as 3 weeks. The symptoms of scabies are mostly allergy to the mites, their eggs, and droppings. The medicine kills them, but it takes time for their bodies and the other stuff to break down. Until then, the symptoms often continue. If it has been more than 3 weeks, get rechecked.
