Several things: If swollen use ice to the ball of the foot, take an anti-inflamatory.

Use an orthotic to support the arch and cushion the ball of the foot.
Wear a flat shoe so pressure is placed on the front of the foot.

Accepted Answer

Pain: It is pain located on the bottom of the foot under the metatarsal bones just behind the toes.  It can come from injury or can be overuse or from loss of the fat pad.  Can be extremely painful.

You need to : Determine what is causing the metatarsalgia. Is it a tight achilles tendon, is it hammer toes causing retrograde buckling on the metatarsal heads? Is it a neuroma or 2 causing the pain. 
Orthotics happen to work well and can be tried prior to considering a surgical procedure.

It depends: On how extensive the surgical procedure is, and how many bones are operated on and what time of fixation (plates, pins, screws) are used.  Talk to an experienced foot surgeon for a more specific answer for your need. Bone typically needs 6 weeks to heal enough to return to most normal everyday activities.

Caution: No, but use caution when in standing poses.  Yoga usually allows mats to stand on and most times, metatarsalgia pain occurs with steps and walking, not stationary walking, however that doesn't mean it still can't hurt.  Just be cautious in your poses.  Best of luck.

Location.: Plantar fascitiis is a broad banded ligament that starts at the heel and runs under the foot and attaches by the bases of the toes. Metatarsalgia occurs under the metatarsal heads. Generally, platar fascitiis pain is at the heel or arch, even though the fascia does run in the same location as metarsalgia, most of the time the pain is under the met heads it is metatarsalgia.

No: Metatarsalgia is a general diagnosis for pain to the bottom forefoot. If you have no symptoms to your foot you likely do not have metatarsalgia.

Have it evaluated.: Treatment depends on the diagnosis.  Your pain may be as a result of many different causes. Treatment depends on the right diagnosis.  Have it evaluated by a professional.
