hi! ive been getting pink eye for the past 6 weeks. it comes and goes. two different gps have said it was pink eye and have prescribed torbradex & maxitrol. we tested for allergies but it came back negative. my sinuses are also slightly sore. ?

Possibilities: The differential for red eye include the following: viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis, pinguecula, pterygium, corneal ulcer. Sounds like your antibacterials have not resolved the issue. The recurrence with sinus problem would suggest a blockage such as nasolacrimal duct. This drains into the sinuses and if obstructed would cause recurrent eye redness.

i was prescribed maxitrol eye ointment (ophthalmic corticosteroids) for 6 weeks but doing online search and reading leaflets and medicine information, it should be used for like a week to 10 days maximum. is it okay to use it for this long period?

: It depends on your eye disease, some needs to be on steroid drop for a long time. If the medication was prescribed by an ophthalmologist, you can safely take it.

Very warm compresses: The best treatment for styes is very warm (not hot) compresses applied at least 4-5 times per day for 4-5 minutes each time.  Maxitrol and other antibiotics will make no difference as they cannot penetrate the lesion.  Compresses are very effective; usually work.

Maxitrol (dexamethasone neomycin and polymyxin) eye med: Maxitrol (dexamethasone neomycin and polymyxin) is a combination steroid (dexamethasone) and antibiotic (neomycin polymixin). This medication is commonly used in adults in the eye drop and ointment form for mild eye and eyelid infections. Neomycin polymixin is essentially the same as otc neosporin. I would consult with your pediatrician first.  Generally, anything used in the eye should be safe for use in the nose.

: Maxitrol is a steroid which can cause cataracts with long term use. One drop or even using it for week does not put you at risk for cataracts.

: It would be very unusual for maxitrol drops used short term to cause blurring of vision. Long term use can have side effects   related to blurry vision.

Drops or ointment?: Shake bottle well before use.
Put 1 - 2 drops topically in the conjunctival sac(s) 4 - 6 times a day. Dosage may be reduced after three to four days when satisfactory improvement has been obtained. 
Apply small amount of ointment into the conjunctival sac(s) 3 - 4 times a day. When there is favorable response, dosage may be reduced gradually to once a day application for several days.
