i just started accutane. i have really bad constipation i think its unrelated to accutane. is it okay to use a laxative or fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) with this drug?

Yes: You can use a laxative once in a while but concentrate on eating healthy with enough fiber and more fruits and vegetables to avoid medications. If chronically constipated you may need doctors advice of how to tackle it with a stool softener which would be safer.

Holding in a large: Bollus of fluid in the rectum can be uncomfortable. However, if you have been consitpated then getting rid of excess stool will likely be a big relief.

Why???: If your problem is severe constipation, other solutions are better, such as bulk agents (fiber), stool softeners, more fluid intake, etc. Otherwise, there is no benefit and you may be avoiding evaluation by your doctor for another problem or issue that needs to be checked. See your doctor rather than use fleets 3x per week!

Enema: Sometimes an enema will work right away, sometimes it takes an hour or two. Depending on the age of the child you may want to use something by mouth instead. If the child holds his poop and you put something in his bottom he may feel punished and continue to hold in the future.  Clean out, followed by daily stool softener, and consistent toileting time is often a better option.

Miralax works best: you can alternate with Fleets enema. if taken as a bedtime dose, You can repeat the Miralax the following morning; however, I suggest using single doses for the previous day.

Depends on details: Each person with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, some things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber-with-water, Miralax (polyethylene glycol), Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives... A daily enema usually may be done for 1-3 days if needed.

no bm after using fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) x2 nights in a row & 1  suppository before then.  last bm was 1 week ago.  cause for concern? or ok to wait til monday?

Probably OK: But the more important question is why are you this constipated?  How do you feel otherwise?  If your abdomen is distended, you have nausea or vomiting, are running a fever or having other symptoms you may need to be seen sooner.  You should see a doctor and have the constipation evaluated completely, including thyroid function tests.

i am having a transperineal prostate biopsy. the directions indicate that i should take a fleet enema the day before the biopsy. i live alone and it may be difficult for me to administer an enema to myself..can the biopsy take place without the enema?

: Yes, enema needs to be done to clear up the rectum because the ultrasound probe has to be placed in the rectum for guiding the biopsy needle even with transperineal approach.
