Decrease symptoms: This medication is used to treat certain bladder/urinary tract symptoms. Flavoxate is a smooth-muscle relaxant. It works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder. Flavoxate helps to reduce leaking of urine, feelings of needing to urinate right away, frequent trips to the bathroom, and bladder pain. This medication does not treat the cause of your bladder symptoms (e.g., urinary tract  infections).

Flavoxate: This works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bladder. It is taken 3-4 times a day. Should work quickly in 1-2 days.

If you have: overactive bladder, Flavoxate is indicated to help reduce the overactivity by smoothing/calming the "spasms" noted to cause the frequent urination.  Even though it works at the muscle fiber level, you should not be able to tell that there is any "spasm". 2 day of medication should start to give some positive change, but I would give it a week solid before you decide whether the medication works.

In general, it is good idea to be checked out to see what the potential underlying causes for irritative voiding symptoms may be - so making sure of no bladder outlet obstruction by poor sphincter relaxation, stone, or stricture along the urethra; flavoxate is not good for these conditions. So, be evaluated timely...

Yes: Flavoxate or urospas has been assigned category b by the fda.  Many of the drugs used in pregnancy fall under this category and while appear to be safe, the patient must be aware that there are no controlled studies using the drug in pregnancy. Determining exactly what you could be sensitized to in order to practice appropriate avoidance measures is also important. If medications and avoidance are not effective or not feasible allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) could be an option as well. Other meds include Sudafed, Mucinex, (guaifenesin) Afrin, oral antihistamines

No cure yet, but...: Allergy shots (allergen immunotherapy) is currently the only treatment that is disease modifiying, meaning it can change how the body responds to exposure to allergens.
