Cancer: The onyt indication to remove a prostate is for cancer. If one had their prostate removed for cancer and the psa begins to rise, this is an indication that the cancer has recurred. You must see youur urologist for further testing and to begin treatment.

Not really : It may increase the psa very slightly but only briefly as part of an inflammatory response. But, generally, no. The psa should not be elevated high enough to worry. If it is, you need it checked out.

We need more info: Send us your PSA level values and tell us your age. Then we can guide you further.  It is a good idea to have a recheck of PSA in 2 to 3 months in case the first value is on the higher side of normal for your age. Other tests may not be all that helpful(ESR has NO role in this situation)

Serum concentration: Of prostate specific antigen.  Normal level is less than 4 nano-grams per cc.  However lower levels do not mean lack of disease.  Levels higher than 4 may be associated with benign enlargement of prostate or prostate cancer.

Prostate: From your comments, you already have seen your family doctor and got prostate exam and psa. The size of the prostate does not rule out some type of bladder outlet obstruction either from internal growth of the prostate, a urethral stricture. It is important to know if you are really retaining urine or just a sensation which can happen with bladder overactivity. See a urologist.

No single level ok: Normal psa levels are age dependent, levels are higher in older people.  Up to the age of 60 the upper limit of normal is 4 ng/ml.  However if a person had a psa level of 0.5ng/ml and the following year it has gone up to 3 ng/ml that would be a cause for concern even though the results are within "normal" limits.  You need to consult your doctor to see if you should get psa done or not.

Yes, get checked.: If this is your first result showing high blood psa, you should see your doctor to get worked up to be sure it isn't prostate cancer.  Other things, like prostate hypertrophy, can give high psa, but there are different results on dre (digital rectal exam) than cancer.  The prostate would be firm, smooth, and rubbery, not rough and irregular.  But you don't know unless you get checked, so see dr.

Common situation: Everyone seems to agree that psa is not a "perfect" cancer screening test. If it was everyone with psa elevation would be found to have cancer upon biopy and that isnt the case. It is still the only way of selecting men for biopsy.  Continue to have semi-anual psa tests.  A second biopsy my be indicated at some future time if it continues to rise over time.
