Not dangerous: I do not know why bupropion is not approved in the uk, except zyban for smoking cessation. It is no more dangerous (and many would say far less) than the ssri and snri drugs (effexor, prozac, paxil, (paroxetine) zoloft etc etc). It is one of the few antidepressants not associated with weight gain or sexual dysfunction, and the rate of seizures, of concern, is really low. See if doc will order from us/canada...

can you please discuss names of the medications they put teens on for depression?

Medications : Teens can be started on the same antidepressants that adults take for though the dosage may be lower. Names of anitdepressants include lexapro, zoloft, celexa, prozac, Effexor (venlafaxine) and wellbutrin.  It is important that teens be monitored closely on these medications as there can be an increased risk of suicide for some individuals.

Depression: There are many other depression medications with fewer side-effects. Best approach is combining medications with Psychotherapy with life style changes.

See a psychiatrist: You have to see a psychiatrist. In some cases when pts are medication resistant ECT is used (electro convulsive therapy).

Variable.: Some people work through their depression fine without use of psychiatric medications. However, if a person has significant neurovegetative symptoms (like not eating, not sleeping, not bathing etc.) then they may benefit from psychotropic medications to get back on track.

Psychiatrist or: psychologist, although the latter do not prescribe in most states (two or three states allow psychologists to prescribe).   Most psychiatric medication is prescribed by doctors other than psychiatrist, notably family physicians.   If the depression is simple and not complicated by other conditions, this might be OK.   Psychiatrist usually disagree with this idea.
