#1 is pregnancy!: But also pcos, stress, ovulatory dysfunction, infection, scarring, medications, metabolic dysfunction (like thyroid or prolactin), adrenal dysfunction, medications including birth control pills, menopause, etc.  There are a ga-zillion things that can cause periods to stop.  Depends on the specific circumstances in your life.  See your doctor to discuss.

Not normal: Most women have a cycle about every 28 days.  If you are bleeding twice in a month, or have bleeding that you consider unrelated to your normal cycle, then you need to be evaluated.  Women over the age of 40 should have:
1.  An exam
2.  An endometrial biopsy
3.  An ultrasound
a common cause of extra bleeding is uterine polyps!

Ocps: Birth control pills tend to decrease the amount of bleeding and decrease the duration of bleeding to aprox. 3-5 days.
