i had a blood test for a routine checkup and my rbc,hgb and mchc were slightly lower than normal. rbc was 4.16 (normal range 4.2-5.4) hgb was 11.9 (normal range 12-15) and mchc was 31.8 (normal range 32-36) i was on my period day 6. is this alarming?

: No, this is not unusual. Those values are practically normal, and it is not unusual for a woman who still has menses to run a little low. You may consider eating food that contains iron and even taking an iron supplement. See you are gynecologist if you have excessive bleeding. Good luck.

Thalassemia minor?: With normal packed cell volume, high red cell count, low MCV, I'd consider you may have thalassemia minor. This is good to know because if you marry someone else who has this, the children may have the very serious thalassemia major. Talk with your physician about this and what he/she thinks is actually going on.

Cells a bit small: You're not anemic. Your red cells are smaller and more numerous than most folks'. I am thinking you have thalassemia minor. It's worth knowing as marrying a guy who also has it can result in problems for the kids. Iron deficiency is less likely.

i got a blood test and my hct is .344 (range .33 - 0.45) and mchc (g/l) is 340 (range 300 -350). does this mean i'm bordering on anaemic? i'm pregnant

Hemoglobin: The results you provided are all normal and do not provide information about anemia. If your hemoglobin is above 12 g/dL or 120 g/L you are okay.

my blood test came back: rbc 3.99; mcv 99.0; mch 31.3; mchc 31.6. all other blood tests are normal. what could this be? i have ra and ild and take enbrel and cellcept. could these cause this?

: I am afraid that I don't remember what these values should be.   If they are all too high, then maybe polycythemia.

: Anemia means low red blood cell numbers and related results like hematocrit and hemoglobin, and those results are normal. Therefore, by definition, you do not have anemia. Possibly your iron levels are a bit low, the most common cause of anemia in women.  B12 deficiency is unlikely, but these results don't directly measure B12 or its main effects on blood counts. Discuss with your doctor.

Low iron: If the MCHC level is below 28%, this is considered too low. The MCHC level can be too low because of blood loss over time, or too little iron in the body.
