i am a 65-year-old white female that has been diagnosed with a very painful mastitis.  a repeat ultrasound and mammogram are scheduled to rule out underlying breast cancer.  is this common?

: Sometimes breast cancer may manifest as an inflammatory breast but this form is much less common compared with a simple mastitis.
You should not worry much at this time, keep the appointment for ultrasound and mammogram.

"yes": Most common post -partum  but other times infection or inflammation can occur but always this has to be checked by a md for the rare possibility of inflammatory breast cancer
males  they luck out again -- rare- I have only 2 in 3! years  with cysts and infection -one due to trauma-- one with 2nd dcis.

Possible: Mastitis or breast infection is common in women who breastfeed but can also happen in women who are not breastfeeding.  If an infection has not been adequately treated, it is possible for it the recur, even years later.

my 8 month old son was diagnosed with mastitis. how could he get this? does this happen often?

Accepted Answer

Not very often: Mastitis is inflammation and infection of the breast tissue.
Commonly happen from contamination from own skin, staph or strep are the most common bugs.
Its also associated with micro trauma or contusion/ compression of breast tissue plus  blockage  on the tiny pipes of the gland .
Sometimes required just warm compress and oral antibiotics.
Occasionally incision and drainage  by the surgeon

is there any way to prevent recurring mastitis in a postpartum woman?

If Rx fails-surgery: We do everything not to operate especially in the post partum period    but if long standing drainage-infection- drainage-- abscesses  we will make a circumareolar incision and tie off the ducts under the nipple and remove all surrounding inflammatory tissue.

breastfeeding my three day old. my breasts are very full and she does not fully empty them. is that okay or will i develop mastitis?

Breastfeeding: If you are breastfeeding and are still full after your infant is through feeding, pump your breasts and store the milk in the freezer for later use

i have mastitis and i'm on strong medication and antibiotics and i had to stop breastfeeding my 7 week old son. is it possible for me to breastfeed him once i've healed? won't the infection come back again?

Mastitis: It is possible to breast feed again after the infection has cleared. You may want to use warm compresses after feeds and cleaning of the area after feeds to help prevent recurrence of the mastitis.

Inflammation breasts: It is usually caused by bacteria that lives on the skin and is treated with antibiotics.  It is possible the inverted nipples were irritated  but mastitis occurs in non-inverted nipples too. It is most commonly seen  in nursing mothers when a milk duct gets blocked.

my 3week old breastfed baby has green poop. i have been taking antibiotics for mastitis, could it be a reaction and should i stop taking them? thanks

Green is ok: Hello.  Green stool color for a neonate is still considered normal.  Stool colors can range from yellow (like mustard) to green, brown or even gray at times.  Colors of concern would be red, black (indicative of blood), or white (liver problem).  As long as you don't see the latter colors, your baby's stools are fine.
