Thyroid disorder: It's a good plan to get a needle biopsy for the mass.I suspect that the calcification you refer to is actually part of the thyroid mass rather than next to it, but regardless the mass does require biopsy.The diagnosis of cancer is something that is best to await a tissue biopsy before speculation of the diagnosis.It is certainly concerning for a male your age to have a large calcified thyroid mass.

Alot: Could be several things.  Is it growing?  Was it related to an injury, ie form after a fall?  Are you having any constitutional symptoms like night sweats, fevers or weight loss or any history of malignancy.  Does it hurt?  Long story short, if getting bigger, have it checked out. Could be a whole slew of things from benign conditions like lipomas and ganglions to tumors.

Cannot diagnose: You need to be seen by a doctor, provide a history and be examined.  This should be fully evaluated by a professional before treatment recommendations are made.

Followup: You would certainly do well to followup with the physician directly who ordered the MRI.  Consultation with a neurologist and/or a neurosurgeon may be indicated.

Yes: A mass of this size is always of concern even it may just be a lobe of the thyroid.  Do get the ultrasound.

MRI: What did the MRI show? The neck lump could be unrelated to the pain in the lower back, hip, leg.  May be a lipoma which is a benign fatty tumor.
