Not known yet: Marijuana does affect the intestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It is uncertain if marijuana worsens gastroesophageal reflux (the cause of heartburn and Barrett&#x27;s esophagus changes), improves GE reflux, or has no effect on reflux. Those who like marijuana say that marijuana improves reflux symptoms, but there is not good research evidence to back up their claims.

i am a 55 yo f living in wa and have barrett's esophagus.  would marijuana use 2-4x/year increase chance of esophageal cancer?

Accepted Answer

No: there is no evidence that marijuana usage increases the risk of esophageal cancer. It would be even less likely, given the infrequent nature of your usage. You should follow your anti-reflux regimen closely though, given that you have Barrett's esophagus. If you're overly concerned about the marijuana smoke, you could consider vaporization or edibles....Good luck.

i had an esophagus tear from excessive throwing up, and it caused a slight pneumothorax. how long until i can smoke marijuana. i know i have to wait a long time but at what point can i start again?

Talk to pediatrician: Talk to your pediatrician. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome has to be ruled out before ever thinking to smoke marijuana again. An esophageal tear is a life threatening complication and a clear cause for your nausea and vomiting has to be found first. At your age the risk of using marijuana outweighs the benefits of it.

i had a small pneumothorax caused by a perforated esophagus, which was caused by excessive and violent throwing up. can i smoke marijuana after this? since the pneumothorax was not caused by damage to the lungs, i was wondering if that changes things?

No smoke exposure: A pneumothorax predisposes you to a recurrence of the pneumothorax.  Smoke exposure may cause lung disease which will contribute to the problem .Please avoid smoke exposure. In addition, pleases see GI for follow up and watch for signs of chest pain, shortness of breath and vomiting.

i have barrets esophagus and had an ablation on october 24th. i am curious if smoking marijuana is harming me or if i can continue. i do not drink or use any other drugs. i take my ppi every morning before my meal - the checkup isn't for 4months?

: Marijuana can definitely worsen GERD. In addition many studies are pointing out various other deleterious effects from weed. Do yourself a favor and abandon the practice of using it.

Same question: Both weed and alcohol are bad for you. If you are shopping for an answer that you would like, that is not helpful for you.

ive been suffering with depersonalization for a week or two after quitting marijuana but the thing is that its an on and off type of deal what are some causes that can trigger these symptoms and how can i overcome my depersonalization?

: A thorough assessment will be needed by your primary care doc as marijuana is known to cause or induce such states. However, other conditions cannot be ruled out. Otherwise a poorly understood condition that may last for months, also categorized under cannabis induced depersonalization-derealization syndrome.

: Research suggests that marijuana use may cause functional impairment in cognitive abilities. However, the degree &amp; duration of this impairment generally depends on how much &amp; how long you used it. And so there should not be any long term impairment in your memory from the short duration of use which you have described. However, if the problem persists please see your Family Doctor for an exam.
