Can be healthy: Some folks just have big lymph nodes. Cancer in kids very seldom announces itself this way. If Junior appears otherwise healthy and the routine labs are normal, be thankful and leave it alone. If Junior seems clearly more prone to infections than other kids, then this may be one of the mild genetic immunodeficiencies in which lymph nodes grow over to compensate.

Not if...: ...due to Mesenteric Adenitis (enlargement of lymph nodes in abdominal mesentery) is commonly seen in conditions that mimic acute appendicitis. When accompanied by inflammation of the ileum, &amp; crohn's disease has been excluded, consider bacterial infection caused by yersinia enterocolitica, campylobacter, salmonella. Adenitis may also reflect non-GI inflammatory processes in the abdomen or pelvis.

May be normal: Swollen lymph nodes may be normal in children depending on the case.If your child is acting well, eating/growing well, and the lab work is normal, this may be a reactive lymph node (is it in the neck?). Lymph nodes react to anything foreign in the body, including bacteria/ viral infections and allergies, and may stay swollen for prolonged periods. If it is changing, follow up with your doctor.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

No: Keep an eye on it, and if your physician is not concerned, i wouldn't be either.  Depending on location, this may actually be a little cyst.

Variable: They are usually pea sized at rest and occasionally bean sized.When they become sore to touch or reach quarter size they have been stimulated and are doing what lymph glands do.The increased size generally persists up to 3 wks before fading. Rarely they trap aggressive germs and become golf ball sized and need to be drained.

Family practice: I'm not sure you are feeling/seeing ln's in that area. It could be cysts or infected hair follicles. Get them checked out.

What is RHS??: Everybody has multiple lymphnodes thorughout the body and are often easily palpated in a child's neck, as well as behind the ear and the lower hairline,  as they often enlarge in response to mild URI's  or scalp conditions and then remain slightly enlarged for some time. A nodule that is small and easilty moveable is usually benign, but one that continues to enlarge or is tender needs evaluation.

Needs follow up.: Cervical lymph nodes (in the neck) are common in children.  They can persist for very long periods of time.  Most important is that your pediatrician knows about them and re-examines them periodically (remind him or her from time to time).  They can be removed surgically or biopsied but this is not usually necessary.
