Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Under 3 cm: Bigger than 3 cm is cause for interest, but more concerning are rapidly-enlarging nodes that are not tender, or that are fixed to surrounding structures. Neck nodes shrink and grow seemingly for no reason.

Need more info: Your general understanding of the issue is correct. However, you should check the glands every couple of weeks. if any of the lymph glands doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, you should see a doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

is a cluster of mobile lymph nodes on back of 2 yo neck normal.  all different sizes. they seem like they are all together but i can feel each one?

Yes: There are thousands of lymph node located around the body.Many in the neck, head,  behind the ear are prominent in kids as they are not buried in tissue . At rest these are often 1/4 inch in diameter and may grow to marble sized when reacting to a stimulus. Bug bites, or viral infections can increase their size to 1 cm or more.Most will  shrink  down to pre-stimulated size over 3-4 wks.

my 3.6 year old has a 13mm by 6mm and some other less then 1cm lymph nodes on left side of his neck since 8 last months.wht should be done? same size

Monitor: What you describe are likely normal resting lymph nodes. They are more often found in the neck because they are not buried within fat or tissue like they are in the rest of the body. At that age the most common problem they could bring is when one swells to golf ball size from infection &amp; needs to be drained to heal. Most often they swell when working &amp; shrink weeks later to rest.

Very possibly...: but I think you should get an expert opinion.  I would advise you have your physician examine them and confirm your assessment that these lymph nodes are benign.  Then you can agree together on whether it is safe for you to self-monitor them, or if she/he wants you to return for a recheck just to make sure all remains stable/benign. Good wishes:)

2 cm or more: Lymph nodes in the neck are frequently palpable, particularyly in a thin neck.  Nodes of concern are generally greater than 2 cm in diameter.  Other worrisome signs are nodes that are very hard, immobile, multiple, or very tender.
