Generally not: If pneumonia is community acquired, your physician will usually treat you with antibiotics given normal flora present in your community.  Biopsy is not required unless the pneumonia does not resolve and there might be cause for concern when considering your medical history.  In such cases, a bronchoscopy may be required.  This is rare if only a pneumonia is concerned.

Pneumonia problems: Your question is a good one--u hate to think that each time the body fires up the inflammation system that there can be longer term consequences but there can be. I think of cystic fibrosis patients and what's called bronchiectasis- or enlargement of the breathing tubes. Interestingly, structural defects in the lung/airways can lead to pneumonia so it could b a vicious cycle. Hope u get a lung doc

can an x-ray differentiate between fluid on the lung and pneumonia?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Chest xray is good for differentiating fluid from pneumonia; fluid may collect around the lung rather than in the lung (known as a pleural effusion).  Also pneumonia can be very dense and involve a complete lobe of the lung whereas fluild may be more patchy.  Clinical history and exam of the patient also helps to make sure the diagnosis is accurate.

Hmm sounds serious: Who told you that you have blood clots in  your lungs?

I would ask the person who told this to you.

Blood clots in the lungs usually means -pulmonary embolus - go look that up.

my best friend has a round of pneumonia and they found a cyst about 5 cm in his lung. they said cyst . he is 65 could it be a tumor?

Mgt: The cyst may represent an area of infection. A follow up study should be performed. If he is a smoker, has a history of smoking in the past, and/or produces sputum, he should have sputum cytologies sent by your PCP. If there is no recent TB test, this can be performed at the same time. A virtual appointment is available online and the radiograph can be uploaded.

may dad 87 has pneumonia dr says he see's a spot on lung needs to re examine in 2 months could that spot be from the pneumonia itself ?

Yes....: The spot could be from the pneumonia. If it is, then it will get smaller over time. This is the reason for getting another x-ray in 2 months. If it is a tumor, it won't get smaller-a benign tumor will stay the same and a malignancy will get bigger. Getting x-rays over time will help figure out the diagnosis. Good luck!!!

i'm sure i have some form of pneumonia (self-diagnosis). coughing w/ phlegm and rattling sound in lungs for past 12 days. can it go away on its own?

Hard to tell: The only way to diagnose pneumonia will be with physical exam and sometimes chest X-ray can make the diagnosis more clear.  If it is pneumonia you need to be antibiotics. Please consult your physician to be diagnosed appropriately and for treatment.

when a child grows resistent ( esbl  kleb o ) regularly in their lungs/trach, would high-dose amoxicillan be effective against a pneumonia  (no c&s)?

Accepted Answer

Likely not: But not impossible. No klebsiella is sensitive to Amoxicillin since all produce an enzyme called betalactamase.  Just cause one is colonized by a resistant bug doesn't mean that the bug is in the lungs causing pneumonia isn't a much more sensitive one.

asthma 3 months after pneumonia. symptoms of hyperinflated lungs and hyperventilation syndrome. i know i need to see my dr, but what can i do for now?

Asthma uncontrolled: It seems your asthma is not controlled. A pneumonia can trigger asthma symptoms and they can linger for a while. You need an inhaler to help you breathe. I would go seek immediate medical attention if you are having trouble breathing.

this morning i woke up with an extreme burning sensation in my lungs every time i cough i've had pneumonia and bronchitis and it doesn't feel those. ?

See a doctor: You should be examined and probably will need a chest x-ray.  You have omitted important aspects of the illness, such as fever, chills, nature of the material you are coughing up, or not.  Are you short of breath?  Write everything down, go and see a good clinician and hope you get better soon, .
