i work really hard to help my kids stay active and eat right. now one has a diagnosis of lung abscess. what else can i do so that it doesn't affect overall health?

See your doctor: Lung abscess is very rare in children. Have your doctor check your child out for aspiration, swallowing properly, and possible foreign body.

Poor prognosis: Lung abscess occuring between the lung and chest wall is called an empyema and requires prompt drainage with a tube or surgery.  Empyemas tend to be quite acidic and increase in size destroying surrounding and eventually spreading to blood stream. Lung abscess in the lung also tend to increase in size and can enter the blood stream.  People who get abscess tend to be in poor health to start with

could lung abscess be the cause of bad breath?

Yes, but no: A lung abscess is so completely rare when compared to oral reasons for bad breath. I would not suspect an abscess of a lung unless there where more breathing/pleurisy type symptoms. My first suggestion would be brush your tongue and drink water. See a dentist to determine if there is a true dental reason that you have bad breath if you are a smoker, stop now !

Yes: After severe influenza a secondary bacterial process would be typical. Fortunately young patients are resilient and a functional recovery is expected.

Breathing priority?: Well, I wonder if they are concerned that your lungs filling up with bacteria and fluid is more dangerous than the perforated rectum at this moment and that's why they're concentrating on the chest infection. However, I would think they'd need to cross treat you with another antibiotic geared toward treating gastrointestinal abscess as well. The sepsis could be due to either.Wish you the best.

what is the best way to get rid of a large abscess on the chest without lancing/draining? thank you?

Probably none: Sometimes applying heat will allow smaller pustules to rise to the skin surface &amp; drain/heal. However, large abscesses often form a tough rhine surrounding the pus ball that must be removed surgically or the abscess will continue to form. Ignore it for too long &amp; it may put the person in the hospital with blood poisoning.

Xrays: X-rays are not the ideal test for evaluation of an abscess or cyst.  Soft tissue structures will better be visible using an ultrasound, ct scan or mri.

feel sensation in my chest by my heart. have an abscess tooth being treated by clindamyacin. feel fine, smoke n drink also have anxiety should i worry?

Yes: Your life style places you at risk.  Antibiotic will control spread of infection but will not cure abscess...tooth needs root canal or extraction.  Call your PCP re:  chest sensations.  See Dentist to Rx tooth.

should i be concerned that i now have pleural thickening as a result of a perforated esophagus and a 5 centimeter abscess with pleuritic chest pain ?

Mgt: I would suggest cultures of the abscess fluid to include bacterial and TB tests. The thickening may be reactive scarring, but the fluid should be analyzed to guide further management.
